A Collective Journey Through Art
This year during the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours 2024, my studio was filled with energy, curiosity, and collaboration. I had the privilege of sharing a unique empathic art experience with all who visited, which culminated in the creation of my newest piece, Blue Skies Ahead.
The idea was simple yet profound. I asked each visitor to take a moment, reflect on the statement “blue skies ahead,” and consider what it meant to them. Then, I invited them to make a mark—a gesture, a symbol, or even a feeling expressed on canvas. These marks became more than just strokes of paint; they embodied the hopes, dreams, and emotions of everyone who participated.
While none of these marks are visible in the finished work, their presence remains integral. Each mark inspired the energy and direction of the piece, infusing it with layers of meaning. As I worked, the marks often guided my choices—the colors I selected, the textures I emphasized, and even the inflection I placed in my strokes. I sought to express the emotional tonality of the marks made by each participant, translating their sentiments into something tangible yet universal.
The textures and colors in Blue Skies Ahead are a reflection of this collective energy. The rich blues and soft purples, layered with shimmering highlights, seem to echo themes of growth, renewal, and light breaking through. The interplay of colors and textures emerged as a visual dialogue between the marks beneath the surface and my own artistic response to them.
As I look at the finished piece, I see it as a celebration of shared expression and the beauty of interconnectedness. Yet, I also know that every viewer will see something different. What does Blue Skies Ahead mean to you? Does it remind you of hope, calm after a storm, or perhaps a new beginning on the horizon?
Thank you to everyone who joined me in this collaborative journey. Your marks may not be seen, but they are profoundly felt.
